Recovering from Achilles Tendon Surgery

by | Aug 22, 2016

If your summer fun came to a screeching halt after you tried to show the kids how to dunk a basketball only to blow out your Achilles, we’re here for you! The Achilles is the biggest tendon in your body so it’s understandable that when surgery is needed due to a severe rupture, sorry, but you’re definitely in for a long road to recovery—typically it takes as much as 6 months.

What to Expect

At first you will likely experience swelling and discoloration and will need to rest, ice and elevate your leg. After Achilles tendon surgery, you can expect to spend 6 to 12 weeks in a cast or walking boot, often with the foot pointed downward so the tendon can heal in proper position. This will gradually be adjusted to a neutral position over time. You may be able to put weight on your foot after several weeks, but you will need physical therapy to strengthen the tendon enough to restore function completely. Until you get the go ahead though, you will need crutches or a knee scooter to get around.

It’s important to follow at-home instructions closely, including medications, activity and follow-up care.

How soon you’ll get back to showing the kids how it’s done depends on how smoothly your recovery goes. In the meantime, try to think of the positives—you have a great story to share, and you can actually take some time to kick back and relax!

Remember, we are here to help with your surgery and throughout your recovery so you can get back on your feet as soon as possible. For more information about recovering from Achilles tendon surgery, or to make an appointment, you can contact our Ladera Ranch, CA office at (949) 364-9255 (WALK).
